Looking After Wood Flooring
At First Floors we receive several telephone calls and emails from people requesting repairs to their flooring. However, most of the repairs we carry out are from preventative accidents. Follow these steps below to ensure that your wooden flooring stays as beautiful as the day it was installed.
1. Make use of doormats and floor protection anywhere there is a door or high levels of footfall. Runners, rugs and mats are the best protection from stones and heel marks – make sure that they are made from natural materials so that your floor can breathe and aren’t damaged by trapped moisture.
2. Immediately clean up any fluid spills, and dry the area properly. If you spill any liquids, make sure they are mopped up straight away using a damp, not wet, cloth and that the area is dried properly.
3. Never drag furniture across the room, instead use furniture castors to protect your floors.
4. Use soft cloths and mops, do not use abrasive cleaning fluid or materials such as scouring pads or hard bristle brooms.
5. Don’t use strong detergents on your wood floor, it could stain your floor or could make the wood dull over time. We recommend using water and very mild detergents – there are lots of specialist cleaners on the market so it’s worth investing in the right product. Never use bleach!
6. Try not to walk on the floors with stilettos or sports shoes such as golf or football boots as these can leave marks on the floor.
7. Give your pets a manicure! Sharp nails can cause small dents in the wood.
If you take care of your wood floor, it will last for many years and will continue to look as beautiful as the day it was installed.
