Zoom H4n Review
Over the years I have been amazed by how the size of a moveable recording kit are actually coming down. It has right now reached a point where one can pretty much point as well as record professional good quality audio with a modest little handheld unit like the Zoom H4n Dvr.
Samson, the company behind your Zoom line of goods has been making easily transportable recorders for a while currently and they have taken customer feedback gathered from their earlier products like the H2 & H4 and also distilled it into the Glide H4n. Simply put, the H4n can be everything that users was asking for over the years.
Actually, I was initially a little skeptical about the top quality of Zoom’s audio documenting. After trying it away for a few months, I could confidently say that this kind of Digital Recorder does some seriously good quality music recording, especially for the size and price.
Your feature list on this digital recorder is exhaustive ample to cater to anyone right from musicians planning to record their rehearsals to be able to sound guys using this as their backup recorder.
First thing I seen when I picked up this recorder was it has a solid/pro feel to it unlike most other hand-held recorders, which have a low priced plastic feel. It also has a rubberized scenario, which gives a solid proper grip.
The interface is easy and easy to use and you can pretty much operate this recorder with 1 hand.
Overall, it’s very intuitive and all the actual controls feel strong. Its as easy as point and shoot except, I was surprised that you have to press file twice on this camera for it to start documenting.
The first time you push record, it goes directly into record ready mode where you can set the recording levels. The second time you media the record button is when it actually starts recording. This isn’t a problem breaker once you get used to it. The backlit Liquid crystal screen is a perfect size to monitor audio levels and it displays everything you need to know clearly.
It is great too be able to record a live show by connecting your ZoomH4n to a line out or recording out on a mixing board. I find the 4-channel mode is really cool for concert mp3s because you can simultaneously Report the Mixing board feed as well as a stereo Area Mix using its superb onboard Mics. The resulting recording has the best of both worlds, the clean direct feed from the Mixing console and a more background mix with area reflections and crowd interaction.
The built-in speaker can be really handy to perform a quick sanity verify when you don’t have access to headphones. The RC4 remote will be handy for smacking record from a distance (if you have set up your recorder in a not so easy to reach position), It is also handy pertaining to setting your amounts as it indicates with LEDs when you are within 6db of clipping.
As with all handheld recorders, dealing with noise can be an problem if the recorder has moved/bumped around while recording. You will get the clearest recording if you fitted the H4n on a Tripod.
In case you are recording outdoors, don’t forget about to use the provided wind screen around the built in Mics, they actually do a semi respectable job of removing wind noise.
