Getting Rid Of Hirsutism

It has been found that number of women face the problem of excessive hair growth. Excessive hair growth problem is known as Hirsutism. In this problem women have excessive hair growth in certain areas of face and body such as moustache and beard area. Though women may have fine, pale, faintly visible hair in these areas, but when hair start growing in a male pattern then it is not good as it spoils the beauty of women.

Therefore hirsutism in women means that hair follicles are being over-stimulated by testosterone. If a woman is having hirsutism then beside excessive amount of hair, women may also have symptom of oily skin, acne, alopecia, a receding hairline etc.

Now let us understand why this problem happens:-

Hirsutism can happen due to increase level of androgens, the male hormones, or oversensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. On the other hand high-circulation of insulin in women can also lead to developing of hirsutism. Insulin in high enough concentration stimulates the ovarian theca cells to produce androgens. On the other hand there could be an effect of high levels of insulin to activate the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) receptor in those cells.

If women have problem of irregular menstrual cycle then the cause could be the polycystic ovary syndrome. If hirsutism and menstrual irregularity are new, the evaluation for potentially more serious conditions such as a tumor of the ovary adrenal glands or pituitary gland is recommended. This is especially important if a woman is skipping periods. Therefore if one has mild hirsutism and doesn’t have any symptoms that suggest overproducing androgen hormones, then one may not require any additional testing. Therefore hormones testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone may be measure fro checking the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, ovary tumors’, adrenal gland tumors, adrenal gland hormone deficiencies or tumor that can stimulate the adrenal glands etc.

On the other hand it has been found that blood sugar and cholesterol level should be tested because diabetes and high level of cholesterol level can usually lead to hirsutism problem.

According to studies if a specific reason of hirsutism is diagnosed, therefore the treatment is focused and specific for the aetiological factor. So women who are overweight, losing weight may reduce androgen levels and improve hirsutism.

Women who are having hirsutism for them cosmetic treatments that decrease the level of androgens can be very helpful.
