Potash fertilizer’s market foreground is not optimistic
Because of the limitation by resource conditions and other causes, the situation of the supply and demand of potash fertilizer in China cannot be optimistic. On the one hand, the production of potash fertilizer cannot increase greatly in a short time, and on the other, the demand for potash fertilizer goes up year by year; so the supply and demand contradiction becomes sharp steadily and the gap becomes larger and larger. The situation of relying on imports to make up the shortage of potash fertilizer will not change in a long period of time. In order to keep in step with the development of China’s agriculture and alleviate the supply and demand contradiction of potash fertilizer in China, from a long-term point of view, we should still implement the principle of self-reliance and adopt the following measures:
1) We will reasonably and fully use the existing mineral resources in China. Basing ourselves on the potash resources of the Qarhan Playa, Qinghai, we will accelerate the second phase of the construction project of the Qinghai Potash Plant and strive to put the works into operation at the beginning of the 21st century. By then, the domestic production of potash fertilizer will reach about 700,000 tons K2O per year and can alleviate the urgent shortage of potash fertilizer in China to some extent. Meanwhile we need to strengthen the efforts to develop insoluble potash salt resources, further perfect the technology and strive to have a good start at the beginning of the 21st century.
2) We will make full use of foreign resources and actively develop potash resources abroad so as to form stable potash fertilizer production and supply bases. It is necessary to solve the source of potash fertilizer on a long-term and stable basis. To make investments and mine potash resources abroad and especially those in neighboring countries is an effective and rapid way. At present, the relatively ideal targets are some deposits in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Thailand, e.g. the Verchnaja Kam potash deposit in the Commonwealth of Independent States, potash deposits in Central Asia and potash deposits on the Khorat Plateau of Thailand. 3) Efforts should be made to look for new soluble potash resources actively. Work will be carried out in surrounding areas of ore prospect areas. For example, we will continue to look for potash salts in liquid resource areas in Sichuan, polyhalite resource areas in eastern Sichuan, the Ordovician Majiagou salt-bearing sequence in Shaanxi and the Simao basin in Yunnan. Meanwhile efforts should be strengthened to conduct regional research and improve equipment and means for potash search as well as rear service.
4) While developing saline-lake potash salts, it is necessary to strengthen the control of waste brine discharge. In doing so, on one hand we can prevent the influence of waste brines on original mineral resources, and on the other the environment can be immune from pollution; thus the environment can be well protected and the potash production in saline lakes can achieve sustainable development.
