Supply situation of potash to the needy
The situation of supply and demand of potash fertilizer in China is very stern. In 1997 China produced 1.31 million tons of KCl. This production falls far short of the demand and a large amount of potash fertilizer needs to be imported each year to meet the demand of China’s agriculture. Recent imports of potash fertilizer in China are shown in Table 4.9.3.

According to the programs of industrial and agricultural production of China in 2000, total grain production will reach 480 to 500 million tons and in 2010 grain production will reach a new plateau, and shortages of potash fertilizer will attain 4.3 million tons and 6 million tons respectively. The current production capacity of less than 200,000 tons K2O ob-viously falls short of the demand, and even if the second phase of the construction project of potash fertilizer in Qinghai is completed at the beginning of the 21st century, there will be still a large gap between the production capacity of 1.07 million tons KCl per year (i.e. 0.66 million tons K2O per year) to be formed and the future demand.
