(3) Lake salt regionThe whole region has 41 lake salt enterprises, most of which are located in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. In 1997 the lake salt production capacity and output made up 12.41% and 6.62% of the national totals respectively. The main economic indices of the lake salt region are shown in Table 4.8.9.

Table 4.8.9 Main economic indices of China’s lake salt region (1997)

In 1997, China had 6 key lake salt enterprises, of which those with a large production scale were: Inner Mongolia Jarantai Saltworks, which had a production capacity of 1,040,000 t/a and produced 567,500 tons; Inner Mongolia Yabrai Saltworks, with a production capacity of 350,000 t/a and an output of 214,800 tons; Xinjiang Qiquanhu Chemical Plant with a production capacity of 300,000 t/a and an output of 9,800 tons; and Xinjiang Hami Salt Chemical Plant with a production capacity of 230,000 t/a and an output of 148,000 tons. The lake salt industry is characterized by the low rate of operation and low output. The distribution of China’s major salt production enterprises is shown in Fig.
