Office Supplies in a world gone mad!

Office Supplies – Some get excited but most get bored when the subject is broached. Unfortunately office supplies in Ireland are a necessary evil. Just ask the Sinn Fein TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh and I’m sure he agrees that they are a necessary evil. It was recently reported that he spent over €50,000 of taxpayers money over two years on Office Supplies while simultaneously objecting to every tax increase proposed by the Governing Parties of the day.

So addressing the cost of Office Supplies is an imperative for public representatives. Ink Cartridges are not cheap, a set of cartridges for one colour laser printer can cost in excess of €1200 for one set.

So we began to wonder is there any regulation or spend limits on the type, quantity and brand the local office of TD’s and Senators’ can order from the central governmental office supplies stores?

If you take 166 TD’s alone, all with local offices, staff and of course laser printers. The likelihood is that there is no coordination on the purchase of these printers to make sure that universal cartridges are used in order to insure best value.

The fact is, that in the world of office supplies,  the only people who make money off Ink and Toner cartridges are the manufacturers, like HP and Epson. Margins are extremely tight for both retailers and wholesalers of Ink Cartridges. We would much prefer if these self same TD’s actually outlawed the use of Printer Ink. We could then concentrate selling more profitable office supplies.

OK, this is all a little bit tongue in cheek. There is much bigger issues than a TD spending €50,000 on Office Supplies and Ink Cartridges. But a little common sense wouldn’t go astray from our leaders.

Buy Irish, Buy Office Supplies.
