Maruti cars in India – The sibling competitors
Maruti Suzuki is the first name which comes in the mind of every Indian car buyer. The company has got long line-up of products that itself shows its strong presence in the domestic auto-market. Interestingly, within Maruti’s own line up, there have been many products that have challenged each other. Still the sibling competition goes on amongst many of the Maruti cars.
In 1983, the company launched its first product, Maruti 800 that later on got a stiff challenge from its sibling, Maruti Zen. Compared to the 800, the Zen was modernized in looks and had fresh features that tempted many car enthusiasts to skip the 800. Likewise, the launch of Maruti Wagon R in 1999 evolved competition between the 800, the Zen and the Wagon R itself. Then later on in 2000, the company introduced the stunning hatchback Alto that snatched the sales of the 800, the Zen and the Wagon R.
In 2005, the company introduced the entirely different segment with the introduction of Swift hatchback. Maruti Swift got an overwhelming response from the enthusiasts due to its alluring dynamics and fresh features. However, the following launches of Maruti A Star and Maruti Ritz took a major share of Maruti Swift. Another, turnaround from the company was the launch of Maruti Swift Dzire sedan. The Dzire sedan, built on its hatchback segment sibling Swift’s platform, took a larger proportion of its brother’s sales as it offered the pride of a sedan to the enthusiasts at the similar price tag of its little brother. And till today, this rivalry action still continues between the Swift hatchback and the Dzire sedan.
Recently, Maruti has launched the Ertiga MPV which would surely impact the sales of Maruti Eeco and Maruti Omini. Besides this, the company is also projecting to launch the XA Alpha SUV, which might snatch the sales of the Gypsy and the Grand Vitara. For Maruti Suzuki, similar pricing has been one of the major factors for increasing competency amongst the same brand products. Like Maruti Suzuki, other car makers too have been the victim of such sibling rivalry action. Toyota Innova replaced its successful sibling, the Qualis and the recently launched Hyundai Eon can also prove to be a threat for its popular hatchback brother, the Santro. Similarly, Chevrolet Beat, the modernized hatchback has been giving a stiff competition to its other hatchback sibling, the Spark.
It is not the strategy of any auto-unit to increase the competition within its portfolio, but it is the fate that turns these Pullman brothers into the rivals.
