History of Studded tires

For the winter roads it is necessary to improve the tire-road friction. To do this studded tires are used. These are also necessary for ice or snow conditions. Small metal extensions are inserted into the winter tires, these are called studs. These studs increase the tire-road friction. Though it helps to keep the vehicle on the track, but it has some side effects also. It increases pavement wear. When you look for the history of studded tires, you can see their appearance from 1890. Modern studded-tires become popular from the decade of 1950 in Scandinavia. There these tires were used to improve the traction on the icy roads. Then it created its position in U.S. in the next decade. From 1970s its popularity increased.

However, from 1970s it came to attention about the pavement wear effects. Afterwards, different researches conducted for technical improvements of these tires. Governmental restrictions were also applied to control the pavement wear. A typical studded-tire contains 60 to 120 small metal studs. These metal pieces are made of tungsten-carbide. Usually this metal is used to make the studs. The reason to use this metal is its hardness. Tungsten carbide is a very hard metal. Each stud weighs around 1.7 to 1.9 grams. These studs are extended about 1.2 to 1.5 millimeter from the surface of the tire. A metal jacket is embedded into the tire; then the tungsten carbide pin is inserted into the jacket.  Good quality studded tires maintain almost constant protrusion length. These studs are called controlled protrusion studs.

In the winter season roads become slippery, if special tires are not used for the cars, the cars may slip. Then it may cause dangerous accidents. Thinking about such conditions you should use such tires which will not allow the car to slip. Studded tires are those tires which will keep the cars on the track.
