How World War II laid the foundation for every Jeep Store.
Jeep vehicles have been around for over 70 years. The name of this trendsetting 4×4 is rumoured to have originated from the abbreviation for Government Purpose, GP. Some experts think that It could have based on the abbreviation for General Purpose. In either case, it seems that troops eventually started pronouncing GP, as Jeep. In 1943, one of the companies that manufactured Jeep vehicles, Willys Overland, applied to have the name registered like a trademark brand. This application was approved in 1950, and thus Willys Overland became the owners of the brand name. They were therefore among the first companies, granted the right to manufacture vehicles underneath the brand name. Although an authorized trademark, the word jeep may also be used to describe 4×4 vehicles similar in design,inspired through the original Jeep.
The iconic vehicle was initially designed and developed especially for use in The second world war in 1941. As it became evident that America would have to join the War, the U.S government approached several companies to create and possibly manufacture a 4×4 that could be used in the war. This vehicle needed to be extremely tough and powerful, also to be able to deal with unpredictable European terrain. As the army only gave companies 49 the future up with a working prototype, there were only a few companies that responded to the bid. In the end, a functioning prototype was submitted from the American Bantam Car Company. After stringent testing, the army was happy with the specifications from the vehicle and were happy with everything however the engine. They felt that the engine was without enough grunt. The Bantam Car Company also seemed too small to be able to produce the amount of vehicles that the Army would need. It was decided that some of the bigger car companies, namely Ford and Willys Overland could be included to make the Jeeps. They were also given a bit of leeway with regards to making small changes and modifications within the original design. Willys Overland submitted the very best design, which model, the model MB, would be the standard template on which all Jeeps would be manufactured during the war. As the Army needed a lot of vehicles in a really short time, other manufacturers were also permitted to produce vehicles using the Willys design.
Today the Jeep brand name is owned by Chrysler. There many different models that have evolved over the last few decades and still around today. The Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Liberty and Commander are simply some models that extremely popular. The automobile and service arm of Chrysler is known as Mopar.
