Chennai – A City by the Beach

Chennai was formerly known as Madras. Chennai is the capital of the southern state of Tamilnadu in India and is the country’s fourth-largest city. Chennai is a 367-year-old city and is the 34th largest metropolitan area in the world. Chennai also boasts of the 2nd longest seashore in the world. Tourists here can enjoy its history as well as frolic in the many beaches.

Chennai has several well known beaches. Marina Beach is 12 km long and offers excellent opportunities for walks and has a very wide sandy foreshore. The Marina of Madras is the second longest beach in the world. It is an elegant promenade with flower beds along its lanes.

Edward Elliot’s beach is spread along the coast down south from Marina. It is also the night beach for Chennai youth. This beach is comparatively quieter and it is located near Besant Nagar. At the end of this beach are the Velankanni church and the Ashtalakshmi temple. Good roads, pavements, walking track illuminated sands, makes a visit to this beach a real pleasure.

Breezy Beach is located in the quiet neighborhood of Valmiki Nagar (Thiruvanmiyur) in Chennai. It is smaller and less popular than the Elliot’s beach. This beach is not as commercialized as the Elliot’s beach, and is hence more quiet and peaceful. Covelong as it was known earlier is a small fishing village located 40 km (25 mi) from Chennai on the way to Mahabalipuram. Now it is a luxury beach resort.

Fort St. George is located on the banks of Bay of Bengal. It was established as the East India Company’s fortified foothold in Madras and it was from this small trading post that British influence spread throughout India. The establishment of Fort St. George marked the birth of the new city that is Madras, in the year 1640.

Inside the Fort is the Fort Museum is decorated with cannons of Tipu Sultan. There are a lot of interesting artifacts showcased in the museum like coins, artifacts and so on. Apart from the museum, the southern division of the Archaeological Survey of India is located here. The place is famous for its exotic collection of books in the library.

Chennai also boasts of old churches like Basilica of the National Shrine of St.Thomas, St. Mary’s Church and St. Thomas Mount. There are also many ancient temples and mosques as well as many parks and museums to visit.

Chennai is very well connected to all major cities of the country by roads, rails and air.
