Sony Ericsson T280a Review
People at Sony Ericsson have been hard at work for the past few months, and the fruit of their labors was recently uncovered on January 24th this year. The place of launch was Delhi in India, and the models released were the T270 and T280 phones. These phones are targeted at audiences who want a stylish looking phone, at a reasonable cost. In the most recent press conference, the Vice President of the company stated that these phones this phone would definitely appeal to the working class and the corporate class.
Sony Ericsson is known for churning out phones that belong to the Walkman and phone fusion category. The most famous phones belonging to this category are the famous W series and more recent R series which offers radio support. A variety of phones are offered depending on the affordability of the user starting from the J series to the Z series. Sony Ericsson recently incorporated Sony’s Cyber-shot technology with their phones, forming the K series. Of these the T series is fashionably designed and user-friendly.
The T280a is a pocket sized phone; its length is around 13 mm, styled to fit into the smallest of pockets with ease. While not being of the hi-tech type of phones accustomed to the Sony Ericsson label, this one is an entry-level model that will be liked by all. The phone comes with a 1.3 mega pixel camera, which is a standard feature on all entry-level phones. Apart from that, the list has nothing extraordinary, Bluetooth, FM radio and WAP browser.
Text messaging has been made easier in the T280a, and the navigation keys have gained more importance. Switching between the FM radio, message box and the camera has never been this simple, everything is just a click from the other one. The 1.3 mega pixel camera helps in capturing and storing quality pictures, and as always, sharing can be done through the Bluetooth network. HBH-PV770 Bluetooth headsets are among the several other accessories offered, and these offer an amazing audio quality due to its Digital Noise Cancellation technology.
It has a 1.7 inch screen and the resolution is set at 128 x 160 pixels. A set of standard wallpapers and screensavers are provided with the phone, more are available for download. This phone gives you the option of storing an MP3 song as your ring tone, or sticking to the conventional polyphonic ringtones provided. A ring tone composer is provided for bringing out the Mozart in you. Sadly though, there is no vibration mode in this phone. This is probably the biggest setback to this model, as carrying it to meetings and other functions becomes very embarrassing. The inbuilt memory is of 10MB capacity, and there is no option of an expansion card slot provided. So how does it even matter if you can keep an mp3 song as your ring tone?
The T280a comes with a brushed metal finish. And on a compensatory note, animated wallpapers are provided, making up for the low internal and no external memory. It runs on a Java MIDP 2.0 platform, and users can download games from the internet. Battery provided is the standard Lithium ion 780 MAH battery.
The T280a works on GZM/GPRS 850/1800/1900 MHz networks. A few accessories provided with the set are the battery charger CST – 60, portable hands free HPM – 62 and the standard user guide. Optional accessories are Bluetooth headsets that are car connectible and the standard head set.
Colors available for the T280a are Silver on Black and Copper on Black. At certain angles, this phone is reminisent of the Nokia 6300, being slim and having a thumb-sized center button. Apart from the huge differences in features, the T280a is entry-level based, unlike the 6300.
The GPRS is of Class 10, having a 4+1/3+2 slot configuration. It is a 2G model that might not go well in the market, which is currently being dominated by 3G phones. But then again, considering the audience targeted, this model might gain a considerable reputation.
