Yana – Cave Temple in Karanataka

Yana is a small village in the Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka, which is encircled by different rock formations. Yana is situated around 40 km from Sirsi and a distance of 25 km from Kumta, a coastal town. Yana is situated in the lush evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada district. The Mohini Shikhara (peaks) and Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and are the major attraction of Yana. These specific rock formations have made Yana a famous destination for trekkers, pilgrims and nature lovers. The Bhairaveshwara Shikhara is nearly 400 feet and the Mohini Shikhara is about 300 feets from its base. These two peaks are solid mixture of black crystallize limestone. As per the epic, Lord Vishnu (as Mohini) killed an grievous demon, Basmasura at this place only.

A cave temple devoted to Lord Shiva can be found at the base of the Bhairaveshwara peak. Water dribbles from the jutting rocks over the Shiva linga, and nearby people call this water as Gangodbhava. The shrine of Goddess Parvathi is located at the base of the Mohini Shikara.

The Yana temple is a famous pilgrim destination and it is nearly 2 kms trek from the Yana village. Portion of the reserved forests of Shimoga district, Yana temple can be reachable through the thick evergreen forest. The temple is built beneath rocky drops that render a beautiful view. The route leading to the village proceeds about 3 kms beyond the temple through the thick evergreen forest.

A cave is at height of 3 meters in the entrance and has a Shiva Linga in it. Deities in huge numbers offer prayers here. A bronzed sculpture of ‘Chandika’ which is an avatar of Goddess Durga is also found here. Dropping water from the rocks form a small river called ‘Chandihole’ that combines the Aghanashini River at Uppinapattana. Yana also has spiritual value as mentioned in an event of Hindu epic. It is considered that the demon king Bhasmasura executed remorse to acquire a boon from Lord Shiva. As per the blessing, whatever he touched burnt into ashes. Bhasmasura followed Lord Shiva in order to destroy him, who found safety in the Bhairaweshwara peak at Yana.

The Yana Caves are located on the Sahyadri mountain peaks and are famous for rock climbing and camping. The Vibhuti Falls is an excellent waterfall that is encircled by evergreen forests and wild flowers. Yana hill station has its own countrified charm that attracts the tourists tour package . Visitors in huge numbers trek along the village way to view the outstanding rock formations.

Bangalore is the closest major city and train and bus services are accessible till Kumta, the nearest railway station from Yana. Regular buses are available from the city to either Kumta or Sirsi. Roads are broadly good; however, during the rainy season the condition of the roads may worse and the travelers are recommended to be prepared for a bumpy and rough journey. It is a good holidays from nearby places.
