5 Tips to stay organized for youth ministry

All Youth leaders really need a user-friendly process to be organized in all aspects of ministry. Also as a teacher you need a system to prepare as extensively as you can. If you don’t currently have preparation system, get started on creating one! It’s really incredible how much time and effort can be wasted on just planning a youth ministry lesson or sermon when you are unorganized. It can be easy for a youth leader to really feel weighed down and baffled by all of the planning. Try to steer clear of these early thoughts of frustration by preparing your lessons in advance. Rely on a system that is easy and user friendly. Think about the following guidelines when planning and beginning your time with your students.
Keep in mind, being well prepared and having a well-organized youth ministry are qualities of a great youth leader.
1. Have a backup system for all digital elements of your youth ministry. Have a second hard drive, and USB flash drive, so you have copies of all material prepared for your classes and ministry. There is nothing worse than losing a lesson or handout for your students simply because you misplaced it. By having a backup copy of all material, you allow yourself a little wiggle room if you tend to be absent-minded at times.
2. Have a system for filing classroom handouts like a simple filing system. For every class handout or lesson that you use make sure you have one master copy that is always on file, recycle the excess or give them away to your students. Going back to point number 1, make sure you have a digital copy of the handout on your computer.
3. Put together a back-up lesson or class plan that can be used any time during the year. Maybe you simply don’t have time to write a complete bible study because of family commitments, if you have a backup or series of backup bible plans ready to go, you’ll be all set for that week. You never know when you’ll need it!
4. Have a directory with contact information containing the info of all your students and their parents at all times. Having this contact info ready to go, without a second of hesitation, will be a God send in the event of emergency on a trip or at class. You can have this information on a simple sheet that you keep with all of your work, or have everybody’s contact information on your cell phone.
5. One of the best ways to stay organized is by enlisting the help of some of your senior students. Delegate certain tasks to them, that they are responsible for a weekly basis. This can include showing up early to get the class ready, or having a student responsible for taking attendance each week.
Staying organized is very simple, but for some youth leaders it will take a little bit of effort that they are not used to. But if you are interested in your youth ministry succeeding to its full potential, take the extra step and be well prepared, well organized, and ready to teach your students.
