Medisoft Medical Billing Software and EHR and Meaningful Use Incentives
If you run a medical practice, you can get incentives from the government to upgrade your medical record-keeping and reporting. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides incentives to medical practices who invest in EHR software and can prove that they are making “meaningful use” of their investment. Medisoft medical billing software and EHR management solutions are designed to help your office meet and exceed those meaningful use standards.
What Is Meaningful Use?
Essentially, the government is willing to help you invest in improvements to billing and record-keeping that make health care delivery more efficient and effective, not just for your office but overall. To that end, the Office of Health and Human Services has developed a set of standards which eligible practitioners in medical practices must reach in order to demonstrate that they are using technology solutions in a meaningful way.
Who Is an Eligible Professional?
HHS has defined Eligible Professional (EP) to include physicians as defined in the Social Security Act section 1861including medical doctors, doctors of dental surgery or dental medicine, doctors of podiatry and doctors of optometry. They also include certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants under certain situations.
How to Qualify for Meaningful Use Incentives
Meaningful use incentives are being rolled out in several phases to encourage the adoption of gradually increasing use of EHR solutions to improve patient outcomes. The first phase of adoption began in 2011 and continues through 2014. To qualify for the incentives, practice partners must use a certified EHR solution, such as McKesson Practice Choice, and participate in clinical reporting that helps compile data on the adoption of electronic medical records and its effect on patient outcomes.
EPs will be eligible for meaningful use incentives if they use a complete EHR solution, such as Medisoft medical billing and EHR software in a meaningful manner, providing that the Medisoft EHR is connected in a manner that “provides for the electronic exchange of health information to improve the quality of care. In addition, you must submit information on clinical quality measures according to a prescribed schedule.
How Much Are the EHR Meaningful Use Incentive Payments?
The amount of the incentive payments varies according to the volume of your practice and the programs in which you participate. If you qualify as an EP under the Medicare provision, your office is eligible for up to $44,000 in meaningful use payments between 2011 and 2014. If you qualify as an EP under the Medicaid provision, your office may receive up to $63,750 in meaningful use incentives over a six-year period between 2011 and 2021.
