Tungsten is a high-melting or refractory metal among metallurgical and metallic materials. This metal and its alloys form one of the extremely important functional materials for modern industry, national defence and high and new technologies. They are widely used in many fields such as space, atomic energy, shipbuilding, automobile, electrical, electronic and chemical industries. Tungsten-bearing high-temperature alloys, in particular, are utilized mainly for parts of gas turbines, rockets, guided missiles and nuclear reactors, while tungsten-based alloys of high specific gravity are used in antitank and antisubmarine armour-piercing projectile noses.
Tungsten concentrates are used to produce metal tungsten and tungsten carbide, alloys and compounds.
Since 1783 when Spanish people extracted for the first time the metallic tungsten from wolframite by means of charcoal, the development, smelting and processing of tungsten ores have had a history of more than 200 years.
China has made great contributions to the development of the world’s tungsten industry. In the country, tungsten deposit was first discovered in 1907 at the Xihua Mountain, Dayu County, Jiangxi Province and the tungsten mining commenced in 1915~1916. Since then, quite a lot of tungsten districts have been found successively in the Nanling region, causing a constant increase in the tungsten production of the country. At the end of World War I, China’s production of tungsten concentrates reached 10,000 tons, ranking first in the world. The country now still occupies first place in the world in terms of tungsten concentrate production.
China is rich in tungsten resources. In the 1930s~1940s, not only a large number of wolframite deposits but numerous scheelite deposits were found in the country.
In the 1950s~1960s after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, in order to vigorously develop its tungsten industry, the country conducted an unprecedently large-scale geological reconnaissance survey and prospecting of tungsten deposits. The geological prospecting organizations affiliated to its former Ministry of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Metallurgical Industry and Ministry of Geology undertook a rapid, all-round reconnaissance survey and prospecting of the tungsten deposits in Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong as well as in Fujian, Guangxi and Yunnan. During the 1st Five Year Plan (1953~1957), they provided reliable geological results for the key mine construction projects of the wolframite deposits in the four famous mountains (the Xihua, the Daji, the Kuimei and the Pangu) in sou-thern Jiangxi as well as for the construction of tungsten mines in southern Hunan, northern Guangdong and northeastern Guangxi, etc. These results were used as a basis for the design of the tungsten ore mining and dressing in the above-mentioned areas. In the 1960s-1980s, to secure its tungsten mine construction and the sustainable development of its tungsten industry, China continued its massive geological exploration of tungsten deposits. On the basis of intensive geological prospecting, more than 20 mines directly under the enterprises of the Central Government and a large group of State-owned small and medium-sized mines were constructed in the 1950s~1970s. Since the 1980s, the total ore production capacity of the mines owned by the State has reached 8.70 million tons and the annual output of tungsten concentrates has stood at 40,000~50,000 tons (WO3 content, the same below).
