The recall is being done to mend the defect which could lead to leakage of petrol. Half of the recall will be done in the native place of the company that is Japan. The Swift hatchbacks being recalled were manufactured between September 2010 and April 2012.
Out of the total units being recalled, 55,146 units were sold in the domestic market and 53,801 units were shipped to numerous countries like Australia, Mexico and European countries.
Suzuki introduced the new Maruti Swift in 2011 in India along with other auto markets across the globe. The old swift was manufactured in seven plants and sold in about 100 countries.
Swift is a super selling small car from Maruti’s clan of cars, it accounts for a huge number of sales of Maruti India, specially the diesel version of the car is selling like pancakes. No other Maruti car has been able to duplicate the success of Swift. Just last year the company launched the new version of Maruti Swift hatchback which was received very well with the Indian customers.
Looking at the immense popularity of the hatchback, the Japanese automaker is contemplating to bring the Swift Sport variant in India. However, the Swift Sport powered with M16A 1.6litre petrol engine that poops out 135PS will not be able to make it to the Indian shores as the import duty levied on this engine will make the car as expensive as BMW X1. Therefore the Indian Swift Sport could be armed with a 1.4 litre petrol engine that does duty in Maruti Ertiga compact MPV or it can also borrow powertrain from Maruti SX4 which comes affixed with a 1.6 litre engine.
Suzuki Swift Sport will be a part of the premium segment and will have a straight competition from Volkswagen Polo along with its cousin Skoda Fabia. Though Suzuki Swift Sport is a three door hatchback, the India bound hatchback will be a five door hatchback.
On the price front, Suzuki Swift Sport is expected to come with a price tag ranging between Rs 7 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. With the addition of this variant, Maruti eyes to further strengthen its grip in the premium segment of the Indian car market. Swift recently skidded Alto from its top slot and became the best selling hatchback in India. Alto ruled the market as the segment leader and was selling in good numbers until now, but Swift has outshone the segment leader and acquired the top slot. Swift is a highly popular small car not just in India but across the global markets. Maruti Swift price has been tagged competitively at Rs 4.44 lakh and the price goes up to Rs 6,47 lakh (ex-showroom price).
