Preparing For an Adventure Holiday be sincere
People are looking for alternative ways of holidaying, other than just relaxing on a beach all day long. Adrenaline seekers will discover numerous exciting, adventurous ways of getting away from their everyday life. Whatever your destination, you need to prepare very well for this kind of holiday in order to make the most of it.
Get fit
Probably the most important preparation for people considering adventure holidays is to get fit in time. It is important to consider which muscles you will be using in your activity and to prepare them adequately for a few months. For biking or hiking, you need to concentrate on your leg muscles, whereas kayaking and white water rafting need strong arms. Add aerobic fitness and strength training and you are well on your way to being prepared physically.
Get your visa in order if you are travelling in another country; also any other documentation such as an international driver’s licence. Be informed about what vaccinations you need and get them done in time. Start learning a few phrases for a foreign language trip and remember your phrase book or pocket translator.
Luggage and equipment
If you need a backpack, choose it with care. It should be suitable for your torso length (not necessarily your overall length) and have good adjustable straps. Make sure it is large enough for all your belongings and practise walking with it fully loaded before the time.
If you are interested in cycling holidays, you need to ensure that your equipment is in very good order. That includes your bicycle, helmet, gloves, special clothing, like riding shorts and a light for the cycle. A basic tool kit and spare tubes are also necessary. Any other vehicle, like a four wheeled drive SUV, needs to be in excellent condition and insured against any eventuality in a strange country.
The contents of your bag or backpack are the most important. Take only what you need but prepare for most eventualities. Clothing needs to be lightweight and quick to dry; always include some waterproof items and a warm top. Shorts and T-shirts are the most practical. Choose materials that are UV resistant for protection against the sun. Clothing for cycling holidays should be breathable or sweat-wicking, to keep you dry and prevent rashes and fungal infections.
Hiking boots need to fit perfectly and care should be taken when purchasing them. Walk them in before the time and invest in moisture absorbing socks to keep your feet dry. Have plasters on hand in case you develop blisters. Also have a basic first aid kit with you at all times.
A good sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 is essential, as is a hat and good sunglasses with ultra violet (UV) filtering lenses. A cell phone is crucial in case of trouble; make sure to have local emergency numbers stored in case you need them. A camera is not vital, as most cell phones have very good cameras nowadays, but nice to have. Include a good torch in the backpack. An inflatable pillow takes up very little space and will improve your comfort.
