Dr. Hawary: California Smile Design’s Tooth Restoration Specialist

Teeth are made up of enamel, the hardest substance of the body, which serves as the protective covering of the teeth. However, there are still some instances that can cause the teeth to fracture or break down. Fractured tooth are classified on the severity of the fracture as well as the extent to which the damage has occurred. Fractured or broken tooth can be caused by biting or hitting something hard as well as by tooth decay. Sometimes, since only a part of the tooth is broken, no pain can be felt. In most cases, however, the damage is so severe that it causes sharp pain, jaw pain and tooth sensitivity. In these instances, medical attention might be needed. Baby teeth and permanent teeth are handled differently, however common principles are the same.  Some minor broken tooth can be treated through filling the edges of the tooth, but for major fractures, tooth restoration is needed.

California Smile Design Dental Group offers two ways of treating and restoring broken and fractured tooth: through bonding and through porcelain crowns. Bonding works best in repairing chipped, broken, discolored, or misaligned teeth. It can also be used to fill in the gaps between teeth. It is a quick and effective remedy for fractured and broken tooth. However, bonding does produce the long lasting effect that the porcelain crown is able to give. Porcelain crowns cover the entire tooth and replaces unhealthy tooth and cracked tooth structures with porcelain to restore teeth and to protect the remaining tooth structure. It can also be used for bridge attachments, weak tooth protection, and dental implant covering.

In some cases, when bonding and porcelain crowns cannot restore broken tooth, teeth replacements are prescribed.  California Smile Design offers several options for teeth replacements such as implant placements, bridges, partials, or full dentures. Replacements look and function like natural teeth and typically last longer with proper care.
