How to Tip Your Movers
The question of how much you should tip your movers comes up about as often as the question of how much to tip others members of the service sector, such as hairdressers, doormen and taxi drivers. Some people simply don’t know how much is enough, and truth be told, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to tipping your movers. Many movers don’t even expect to be tipped given the fact that moving already costs so much money. However, it’s always good to show a little appreciation for the team of hard workers that help make your life a little bit easier during your move.
Of course, there are different factors to consider, such as how far you are moving and how big of a move you are undertaking. Sometimes though, long distance moving companies will not even allow their employees to accept tips because of the high costs that are attached to long distance moves.
If your movers won’t accept tips though, there are other ways in which you can show your appreciation for a job well done. For example, providing your movers with some snacks and drinks is a great idea, especially with all of the hard work they will be doing throughout the day. By giving them a little break and allowing them to enjoy some refreshing beverages and a few bites to eat, you can show your appreciation for all of their help, whether or not you decide to tip them.
The number of people working on your move will also vary from company to company. Most often, there will be anywhere from two to four people moving your belongings, and if you do decide to tip, providing it in cash to each person individually is typically the best way to do it, to ensure that your tip is divided equally amongst the movers.
Just like there are several different factors that usually determine how much your move costs, there are also different factors that you can use to decide how much you should tip. Unlike tipping your server in a restaurant, tipping based on a percentage is not recommended for a job as nuanced as a move. Instead, you should usually tip anywhere from $10-20 per mover, as that is the most widely accepted amount.
At the end of the day, the decision on what to tip your movers will ultimately be a personal one, and will depend on several different factors, such as the ones discussed here along with other ones as well.
