Honda small cars upsurge Honda sales in India
Honda City sedan had been the bestselling car from its stable but now the cars that are forming the sales figure of Honda India are its small cars Honda Brio and Honda Jazz. In the month of April, the company sold around 2092 units of Honda City sedan in India however, the company registered 3,590 unit sales for its small car Honda Brio. Despite of lack of diesel engine Honda’s small cars have emerged a clear winner by outshining sales of General Motors India, Toyota and Volkswagen in the premium small car segment in the last two months.
If have a look at the combined sales of Honda Brio and Honda Jazz it comes up to 4,890 units, while the combined sales of Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet UV-A is 4,622. On the other hand 3,397 units of Volkswagen Polo and 2,157 units of Toyota Etios Liva were sold in the month of April. On the back of Honda Brio and Honda Jazz premium hatchbacks, Honda accounted for 7.3 per cent share in the premium hatchback segment in April. However, the sales figure of Honda Jazz and Honda Brio is low in comparison to Maruti Suzuki India’s Maruti Swift, Maruti Ritz and Maruti Estilo which accounts for around 30 per cent share in the premium hatchback segment.
Ever since the company resumed production of Honda Brio hatchback in February company has sold around 12,000 units of Brio and an accrued sales of 14,000 ever since its launch in the month of September 2011. Honda Brio’s contribution towards Honda sales in India over last three months has been 44 percent. Honda launched its first hatchback in India in the form of Honda Jazz which could not do well because of its high price which stood at Rs 7.12 lakh and Rs 7.56 lakh. However, in the month of August 2011, Honda launched a cut price new variant of Honda Jazz, the new Honda Jazz price starts at Rs 5.75 lakh and Rs 6.31 lakh (all prices mentioned ex-showroom price Delhi). Honda restored production of small cars recently and the sales of small cars at Honda have surged which now stands at 52 per cent of the total volumes of the auto maker. Not just Honda Brio, Sales of Honda Jazz have also ignited to 1,300 units.
Honda cars are not offered in diesel versions, however, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Etios Liva and Chevrolet Beat are offered in diesel versions but despite of these cars being offered in diesel engine, Honda’s small cars have managed to outpace its rivals. Honda is developing diesel engines for its cars, two types of engines for its sedan, SUV and hatchbacks. Fresh speculations suggest that Honda is developing Honda Brio diesel and the hatchback was also caught testing recently. Especially after the recent hike in petrol prices by Rs 7.50 it has become difficult to maintain petrol powered cars. Diesel car demand will upsurge more and Honda should hurry up as it doesn’t have even a single diesel variant in its stable.
