Ways to remove lake weeds
For years, weeds have been a serious issue. They don’t add wonders to the lake rather messes up the look. People have been continuously finding ways to remove them. It’s been a real frustrating problem. Year wise if a graph is maintained, it would be noticed that the aquatic weeds are growing more in number then reducing.
Lake Weed Removal techniques like manual removal, herbicides, harvesting, pulling, cutting has not helped at all. Rather these have ruined the scenario the most. What happens is when one disturbs the weeds by cutting them; the small wreckages are released in water. And this leads to sinking of the flotsam and jetsam towards the bottom. This is how thousands of more hoes grow. Thus they have not been termed as long term solutions.
Likewise if you talk about chemical treatment, it also has a number of several drawbacks. Toxic acids are added to the lake and with each application it is not necessary that all the aquatic weeds die, there are some who manage to survive. They survive because they have been resistant to the chemicals. Thus, this leads to emergence of weeds that have high resistant to herbicides and would not die. This process keeps on repeating itself and more hoes become resistance resulting in a higher mass of wild plants. Gradually with time, the chemicals get costly and no affect is seen. But the toxins results as threat to aquatic animals.
In recent years the benthic barriers have become quiet famous in giving a helping hand in removal of weeds. It is a better and effective solution. The introduction of gas and water permeable has made these mats efficient enough. Benthic barriers are allowed to float over the lake around docks, boatlifts etc. These are some places where the weeds grow unwanted. The mats don’t allow the sun rays to fall on them and they are not able to get the nutrients and gradually die. This is how other hoes are also not able to grow. Using benthic barriers is really economic; it does not require any electricity to be installed, does not even use chemicals which could be threat to aquatic lives. Due to its light weight, these are easy to install and known as green solution.
Another solution for lake weed removal which has popularly grown is the use of lake bottom blanket. It is a sheet like material lighter than water and floats over the surface easily. The aquatic animals and plants are not harmed with this sheet. They can easily survive underneath. This is just made to kill the wild aquatic weeds and hoes. The principle of this lake bottom blanket is to control the rays to come in which is supposed to be the key source for their growth. Sunlight doesn’t penetrate so does the weeds don’t grow. It is really efficient in the way like it could be used at a location for a month and get rid of the problem. After a month it could be shifted to new area and when it is successful there, you have to roll it up and keep it for the next season.
