Bandhavgarh – Jungle Book

Bandhavgarh is located in the district of Umaria in the state of Madhya Pradesh at the foot hills of the Vindhya hills on the banks of Sone River.
Bandhavgarh National Park is known for having the highest density of tigers of any National Park in the country. At the heart of Bandhavgarh lies a 14th century Fort, set against the cliffs that is part of the place’s varied landscape. For some time in the 20th century, Bandhavgarh Fort was the seat of power of the Chandela Dynasty. Later, it came under the Baghels and then the Rewas. About 106 sq km of the reserve functioned as the hunting ground of the Rewas; each Rewa King was supposed to shoot at least a 100 tigers each. After independence, the reserve was taken over by the Madhya Pradesh Government and in 1968 was made a National Park.
The Bandhavgarh Fort is where you get the maximum tiger sightings. Bandhavgarh is also home to rock-cut caves which have inscriptions inside the structure dating back to the 2nd century BC.
Apart from the tiger, Bandhavgarh will give you a chance to catch glimpses of spotted deer, sambar, nilgai, antelope, gaur, barking deer, chinkara, wild boar, not to mention the elusive leopard and sloth bear. The extensive meadows that the animals come out to graze to, makes it all the more easier to spot them. Bandhavgarh has more than 250 varieties of birds.
In Bandhavgarh you can go into the jungle on a jeep safari or elephant back.
Bandhavgarh is known as Kipling country, as his story ‘The Jungle Book’ was supposed to be set in Bandhavgarh. The irony is that Rudyard Kipling never came here.
Bandhavgarh National Park covers an area of 437 sq km. But despite its small size houses between 50 to 70 tigers which is the highest any park in India can boast of. This greatly increases the odds in favour of spotting the tiger. The park has densely forested tracts and open grassy plains.
Bhagela museum has a lot of items belonging to the Maharajah of Rewa.
The best time is to go between March and November. However, May and June is the time for the best tiger sightings. The park is open from October 1 to June 30.
Jabalpur is the nearest airport, and is a 4-hour drive from Bandhavgarh.
There are numerous luxury resorts and forest guesthouses in and around Bandhavgarh for a comfortable stay. The forest lodges are found inside the jungle and are to be booked in advance. The resorts found on the fringes of the forest are expensive and can arrange for the guided tours, bird watching treks, and the elephant and jeep safaris into the forest.
