Chikmagalur, located on the foothills of Sahyadri Mountains of Western Ghats, is a popular hill station surrounded by high mountains, waterfalls and rivers. The hill station, situated at an altitude of 3400 ft, enjoys a pleasant climate. This pleasant climate attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year. But the ideal time to visit Chikmagalur is from October to April.

Chikmagalur is considered as a popular weekend gateway. The place has also some large tea and coffee plantations. Chikmagalur, a small town situated in the namesake district in Karnataka, has plenty to offer for the tourists, particularly the city folks, by way of waterfalls, rivers, streams, high hills, religious places and historic monuments.

Chikmagalur is known to have several tea and coffee plantations. In fact the town was the place where coffee was first cultivated in India. A Muslim saint, Babu Budan, is believed to have brought coffee seeds from Yemen in 1670 and cultivated them here. A mountain range nearby the town is named after him. Oldest coffee research institute in the Asian continent, known as Central Coffee Research Institution (CCRI), is situated here. A visit to Chikmagalur is incomplete without visits to a few plantations.

Sringeri Mutt, founded by Adi Shankaracharya, is a major pilgrim centre for the Hindus in this area. Sanatana Dharma is still taught in the Mutt. The Mutt also has a shrine of Goddess Sharada, the Goddess of Knowledge. Chikmagalur and its surrounding areas have a number of holy places like Dattareya Peeta, Amruthapura and Belavadi.

Chikmagalur has also several historical monuments and places of interest. Among them are Kodandarama Temple, the Jamie Mosque and the new St.Joseph’s Cathedral.

The nearest airport to Chikmagalur is Mangalore (170 km). The closest railway station is at Kadur at a distance of 40 km from the hill station. The main festivals celebrated in Chikmagalur are Ganesha Chaturthi, Deepavali, Ugadi, and Dussehra.
