Hampi
Hampi is a quaint town located at the banks on Tungabhadra river in the Bellary district. This place was the capital of the Vijaynagar empire in 1336. It is said to be bigger than Rome was during the 16th Century. There are many ruins in this town and it houses a 29-foot monolith of Narasimha that Krishnadevaraya installed in the year 1529.
Deccan Sultanates
Karnataka has many sites belonging to the Deccan Sultanate era. These sites are in places like Gulbarga, Bijapur, Lakshmeshwar, Raichur, and Bidar. The famous Gol Gumbaz lies in Bijapur district.Some of the popular forts in the state are in Bellary, Bidar, Gajendragad fort, Nargund fort, and Savadatti fort.
Coastal Karnataka
Coastal Karnataka is blessed with mesmerizing beaches. Gokarna is known for the famous Om beach and is also a pilgrimage center. Udupi houses the Malpe port and has a 14th century Math. Karkala is located 50 km from Mysore and has a huge statue of Bahubali. Murudeshwar is known for a range of religious places and also its beautiful beaches. Karwar has popular beaches like Ladies Beach and Blue Lagoon Beach. The place finds a mention in one of Rabindranath Tagore’s poems.
Hill Stations
Karnataka covers a part of the beautiful Western Ghats and has hills like Agumbe, Kemmanagundi, Nandi Hills, Honnadu, and Kudremukh. These places are non-commercial and hence, nature is at its best here. Many tourists come here for the waterfalls, boating options, treks, and even for bird watching. The state has many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries like Bannerghatta National Park, Nagarhole National Park, and Bandipur, and Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Anshi National Park, and Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary. Karnataka is home to 21 wildlife sanctuaries and five national parks. UNESCO has included the Western Ghats in the list of World Heritage Sites.
The state has dams at Narayanapur, Karanja, Dhupdal, and Munirabad. It is also home to the popular Jog falls in Shimoga.
