Parents are appalled at the recent GQ Glee spread. I opened it, ready to be appalled, ready to chime in. I was appalled – that I liked it. I was appalled at how unappalled I was, as a mom.I know how I feel about promiscuous pirate princess costumes for my 5 year-old. They make me itch. Super uncomfy. I can’t find a place for that in my child’s life. Not yet. Not at 5. But, I do know that there is a place for it somewhere. One day (gasp) she will grow up, and sexy will be one side of her lovely lady life. But I wasn’t appalled by this.
One side to us as women is sexy. If we so choose, and when. I don’t like it being the ONLY option, but I love choices. And I too, at times, need to feel sexy. It is harder now as a mom, with spit-up on my shirt and a diaper bag on my shoulder, but my sexy side is still there. I was driving in my car a few weeks ago and I heard Lea Michele say she was considering doing a spread for Playboy. I was OK with this. I didn’t flinch and gasp and start yelling at the radio. She is an adult. She is a beautiful woman. But then I heard her say, if it would “further her career, why not?” That was enough to make me veer into a STOP sign. I started scolding the dashboard because, well, I didn’t have Lea’s cell number – Your talent, not your BODY, has lifted you off Broadway stages and carried you to where you are today – a Gleeky, uber-talented, media darling.
Fast forward a few weeks later to GQ magazine. A super sexed up spread of Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, and Cory Monteith. Everyone is gasping and appalled. I thought it was hot. I wasn’t appalled.
As a parent I’m scratching and wondering why this isn’t bothering me when all I’ reading are horror stories of Halloween and the GQ Glee spread. Why aren’t hot and bothered by this? Why didn’ this scare my like the “by”costumes in Target?
Lea Michele,isn’t 5 years-old. She’s an adult. She has a sexy side too. She should embrace that side of her beauty as well. If she did it to further her career, then that’s sad. She doesn’t eed that to further anything. But if she did it because as a woman it is fun to feel sexy sometimes -wonderful. I don’t think she should be type-ast into one side of her either! She is talented, and sometimes she is sexy.
If parents struggle with this, I think they need to start pointing fingers at Hollywood. Why is Hollywood and whoever hires who casting adults to play these young roles? How do these adults play teenagers and live their lives outside of that one gig as innocent,model-like teenagers?
Might I just add that my kids don’t watch Glee. My friends do. But my daughter wants a poster of Justin Beiber, shirtless and almost pants-less on her wall. And Bratz dolls – omplete with leather chaps and platform heels. They are ugly. But the Glee cast in GQ, as adults, in a magazine targeted at adults, was phenomenal.
