Finding Food in London: What to Expect

London is one of the most vibrant cities in the world. The evidence of this is clear: each year, millions of people visit the city in search of the many gems of delight on offer. In days gone by, London was little known for its culinary excellence; rather, tourists came to see the sights, to see the queen, to experience the nightlife and the culture. Today, though, is a different story. London has fast become a city to which the culinary elite flock.

Regardless of your taste of cuisine, you are sure to have your taste buds tantalised to the maximum degree. Here are some of the usual and more unusual types of cuisine that you can expect to find in the capital:

  • Traditional Dishes: the English national dish is debated: is it roast beef with all the trimmings? Or is it Fish and Chips, with a good old dollop of mushy peas? Well, many arguments rage on this subject, and they are usually fought out in the kitchen. Today, our humble fish and chips win awards throughout the world, and there are several UK awards, too. However, the same can be said of roast beef too. The most accurate answer to which is best, though, is an individual matter: it is up to you to decide, and the only way to do this is to actually try the dishes. If you live in London, then you should Brady’s in Wandsworth, for a traditional taste of fish and chips, or alternatively (- or should that be as well as), for the roast beef option most pubs serve these on a Sunday.
  • Alternative, yet traditional dishes: now, this may sound a little odd, but we have used this description because there are alternative restaurants, which have nonetheless ingrainedthemselves in British culture, whereas those restaurants listed in the next bullet point are very different and unique. However, back to the point in hand. Alternative/traditional dishes include Chinese foods, Japanese foods (particularly sushi), French food, Italian food, and a whole host of other national foods. The standard of some of these restaurants is world class, and should certainly be explored by any intrepid culinary adventure seeker. There are some true culinary gems on offer in the capital, and they are not necessarily British by tradition.
  • Off the wall restaurants: being a capital city, you will be unsurprised to learn that there are many unusual restaurants in London. There are those with a novelty theme, such as the Medieval Banquet, where guests dine as the 9th Century nobles did. Other notable restaurants include ‘Dans Le Noir’, where the entire dining experience happens in pitch darkness – this is meant to enhance the taste of the food – although we have never tried it – but we are sure it is delightful, and it is certainly something that the author wishes to try at least once in a lifetime.

There are many restaurants in London, more than 10,000, this can make it a little daunting to find the ideal restaurant, but you can click here to view the popular restaurants of London at http://www.onlyuncle.com/.
