Granite Tile vs. Slab

Granite tiles can make even the most drab or small kitchen look exotic and luxurious. From gray and black granite, to smoky gray and even chocolate-brown and elegant gold, granite tiles are perfect for updating a kitchen or bathroom. There are, of course, pros and cons to choosing granite tiles over slabs, and we’ll take a look at the top four showing why granite tile is the best choice in the long run..
Pros:
1.Tiles are much easier to move and work with than its heavier slab counterpart. You can easily install granite tiles yourself, rather than relying on expensive contractors to move heavy granite slabs into your kitchen or bath. Granite tiles can also be less expensive than slabs; visit your local home improvement store or granite and marble supplier to compare prices.
2.Granite countertops are generally more affordable. Tiles are less expensive than large slabs, and makes sense if you’re tiling a large expanse of floor or countertops. Plus, you’ll use less labor with tiles, making it even more affordable than heavy, unwieldy granite slabs.
3.Granite tiles for flooring can have a different look and pattern than slabs. You can create a stunning pattern effect using tiles on floors, whereas with a granite slab or veneer, the look is just smooth and one-tone.
Cons
1.Grout. Because you have grout with granite tiles, it can be a pain to clean and care for these grout lines. With a solid granite slab there is no grout to contend with, and some homeowners opt for slabs simply for this reason.
2.Harder to clean. Once again, granite floor tiles with grout are much harder to clean than granite slabs. You have to make sure the grout is cleaned and well-maintained, so germs and bacteria don’t start to grow between the tiles and in the grout lines.
3.More maintenance. If you sealed the grout, you will need to re-seal it every year or two. If you chose not to seal at all, you will need to clean more in order to preserve the color and cleanliness of the grout and tile themselves.
As with any material, there are always a lot of benefits and disadvantages. You have to weigh your budget options, what time you want to spend on the product in the long run, and what granite tiles your local suppliers have on hand in order to decide between tiles and solid slabs.
