Cosmetic Dentist
A cosmetic dentist is the one who helps individuals to enhance their appearance. Most of the time cosmetic surgery is not part of any dental treatment, but it is done purely for aesthetic reasons. This type of dentistry includes adding substances to teeth or to the gums like veneer laminates, caps or crowns, bonding etc. It also includes elimination of structures from tooth and gums, teeth bleaching or whitening, smoothing down teeth, improving the general appearance of the teeth, jaws, and face etc. Basically, a cosmetic dentist only improves the way one looks. It is as simple as saying, if you want a smile similar to your favourite celebrity, visit a cosmetic dentist.
While it is not always advisable to use the service of the cosmetic dentist as it could spoil the natural health of the teeth, people often visit them. Mostly the services rendered by a cosmetic dentist are whitening of teeth or bleaching and composite fillings. The use of porcelain veneers are also common, they are used either to reshape the teeth to perfection or close the gaps between the teeth or simply to whiten the discoloured teeth. All these procedures help in giving that perfect set of dentures and a smile to kill for. All these are purely for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes corrections are also done in situations like gummy smiles, where the gums are excessively visible in proportional teeth, if the teeth are too big or too small in size or in cases where the teeth protrudes out of the mouth. If the gums are too dark, they can be corrected by de-pigmentation.
But the most important thing to be noted here is that there is no branch in dentistry that deals with cosmetic specialization. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as specialization as there are no specific degrees in this respect. Most of the cosmetic dentists are specialized in either Prosthodontics or Orthodontics. These two branches are purely dentistry, which deals with the diagnosis, treatment of certain conditions pertaining to the teeth or oral tissues. Basically, either a Prosthodontist or Orthodontist with reference to the area of concern can do anything that a cosmetic dentist claims to do. Next time anyone planning to visit a cosmetic dentist should make sure the field he specializes in the services you want for. This will help in selecting the right person to perform the service required. For instance, if they specialise in Prosthodontics, they would give good service in the field of teeth correction, fillings, improvement of gums, etc.
It is entirely personal option on how a person wants to project him or herself. One point to remember is that there is nothing called a perfect smile. It is a relative term; hence varies from person to person. So, if you like a celebrity’s smile, it might be best suited for that person, but there is no guarantee that it will suit for your personality also. Before taking any decision think rationally and say cheese!
