Corbett National Park – A Tiger Paradise
Corbett National Park is located in Nainital in Uttarakhand and is home to the Bengal Tiger along with numerous other species of animals and plants. Set up in 1936, it is the oldest national park in the country. Developed also as an ecotourism zone, it also houses nearly 490 species of plants. This wild life park attracts tourists and wildlife lovers from all over the world. According to the official records available, 70,000 tourists visit the Corbett National Park every year. In order to conserve the ecological balance of the park, only a portion of the Tiger Reserve is kept open to the tourists.
Named after the legendary conservator by the same name, the Jim Corbett National Park has a wide array of trees, plants, wild life, reptiles, etc. Trees occupy nearly three-fourth area of the 521-sq.km park, which also houses a lake. This is the first park to be incorporated under the Project Tiger. Dhikuli, which offers a fabulous view of the green belt surrounding the valley, and the guided treks and safaris are some of the prime attractions in the park. Tourists can also visit the Kalagarh Dam and Sitabani, the place where Lord Ram accompanied with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana had stayed during his ‘Vanavasa’.
The Corbett National Park is located in Ramnagar, which is well connected by train to Delhi and Varanasi. At a distance of 295 km from Delhi, Ramnagar can also be approached by road. The visit to the park must be avoided from mid June to mid November owing to the incessant rains and landslides.
