Ferry Company makes effective use of hazard labels
These days, there are many different solutions available to organisations that need to transport dangerous goods and substances. For example, many firms are making use of vermiculite packing material. This mineral is among the safest in the world and when expanded, it is lightweight, incombustible, highly absorbent and non-reactive.
However, as well as making use of effective packing solutions, it is also vital that firms take advantage of the appropriate hazard labels.
One ferry company that has been praised for the way in which it processes hazardous cargo is Interislander. Its system for managing dangerous goods on board its Cook Strait ferries is up for an International Safety at Sea award. It is one of 15 finalists out of 80 nominations from organisations around the globe and the ceremony is due to take place in London this month.
Interislander relies on a system called Passport that helps to ensure hazardous goods are correctly declared and identified. Each year, it carries around 1.15 billion kilograms of dangerous goods, including explosives and radioactive materials.
Without the right hazard labels and processing systems, this could present a great risk to people, property and the environment.
Commenting on the Passport system, the ferry company’s general manager Thomas Davis said: “For Interislander it means we have accurate, uniform information about the goods we are transporting, it is a win-win situation.
“The importance of having accurate and easy to read manifests is paramount for us. If an emergency situation occurred on board one of our ships carrying dangerous goods we would immediately refer to the manifest. The right information in this instance could be a life saver.”
Some of the goods the firm transports by sea may feature vermiculite packing material. This packaging solution has a range of uses and can easily be poured around irregular shaped objects.
