There is prevalent scene that the college students often throw away many shoes and bags which almost the new. And by picking these “rubbish”, scavengers earn 4,000 RMB each month. When asking the scavengers, they are making signs, “these kids are so waste and forget the spirit of frugality. The college students’ behavior really make the scavengers heartbreak. Every time they clean the garbage thrown out by the college students, dormitory cleaners always issue such sigh. As the reporter make a visit to the university dormitories, the following atmosphere really make them shocking, they saw many “expensive” rubbish discarded in the bedroom hallway trash, brand-name T-shirts, bags, bed sheets, shoes, and even unopened food, cosmetics, etc. Everything looked well, but why college students throw them away. One of the dormitory cleaner of Chongqing University of Arts, Aunt Lee told the reporters that these students were so luxury, did not say leaving the rubbish, only by selling their useless books, can they earn some money, but they never did that.
When asked the student who just discarded her “rubbish” answered, “Well, that’s too much trouble to sell these things which only worth a few pennies, I’m too lazy to worry about these things”. From what the student’s said, reporter knew that if the students do not like their “old treasures”, they chose to discard them. The reporter then interviewed students from eight universities, namely Chongqing University, Chongqing Normal University, Chongqing Technology and Business University, Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, etc., from them the reason for throwing things is: the out of fashion and unlike things should be discarded the best, for leaving them will accounted for space. One girl from Sichuan International Studies University said, “I never buy a new things just because something is broken, as long as the things I like, I will not consider whether I had bought something like that”. A report said that most colleges students’ cost of living are more than 2,000 RMB a month.
The reporter interviewed a total of 40 students in eight universities, including 15 boys and 25 girls. Reporter made a rough calculation that these boys were almost spend more than 2,000 yuan a month. According to the statistics, the boys generally will charge 500 yuan in the school meal card, 200 yuan for telephone charges, 600 yuan for purchasing clothes, 700 yuan for dinner and entertainment. So we see that large part of the boys living cost is spend on dinner, clothes and entertainments. If there is a case of feast or girlfriend birthday, they will spend 500 yuan to buy gifts and holiday costs. And for the girls, their monthly expenses are basic in 1800-2200 yuan, of which 50% of the cost spent on clothes and cosmetics, 400 yuan for meal card, 600 yuan used as pocket money to purchase cosmetics and skin care products, and the rest of the money will used to buy all the clothes and cosmetic products. If it’s not enough, they may turn to their boyfriends in sponsoring the purchase of clothes, bags and shoes.
Reporters in the interview, also found an interesting phenomenon, that is, almost every school dormitory are wandering around with a lot of “scavengers”, some of them try to please the floor tube in order to pick the students garbage. The so-called “old man” Mr. Qiu Shenggui has been a scavenger around the Chongqing University for three years. Depend on the garbage he picked from the several universities surrounding Shapingba County, he made himself a salary of 4,00 yuan one month. The money was come from the classified garbage, after sold out in the Flea market.
When asking the students’ parents, they always helpless, they know that their kids are having such a bad custom to spend money, but they have no way. The only kid is regarded as the apple in their parents and grandparents, even they do such behaviors, they just try to be thrift of themselves.
Professor Zhang from Southwest University, said the thrift consciousness in the college students’ heart have long been disappeared, they can not understand their parents hard. Professor Zhang suggests the parents to ask their children to earn money after school time, thus to let them know how hard to earn money by their own. He also hope that parents can give their children the basic living cost and besides this nothing else.
