Renault Duster SUV launched in India at starting price of Rs 7.19 lakh
Today is a grand day for the French car maker Renault as it launched its much-awaited Renault Duster compact SUV in India. Duster was unleashed at a gala event organized in New Delhi, followed by the city of dreams Mumbai and Hyderabad down South. Renault Duster’s price in India starts at Rs 7.19 lakh for the base version of petrol variant, while the 85 PS diesel trim is priced at Rs 7.99 lakh and 110 PS diesel top-end version could be yours if you spend Rs 10.99 lakh. (All prices ex-showroom Delhi).
This is the first rendering from the French car maker in the volume segment which is why Renault has tagged it so competitively. With its launch, the company has also augmented the trend of compact SUVs at a lucrative price tag—something that we will hopefully see more in the future. Talking about the new Duster, the petrol-powered variant has been launched in two trim levels, Renault Duster RxL and Renault Duster RxE. These variants come armed with the 1.6 litre petrol mill with 1598 cc of displacement. The petrol engine can deliver a maximum power of 102 Ps at 5850 Rpm and 145Nm of torque at 3750 Rpm However, the diesel one has been launched in a total of six trims; Renault Duster RxE and Renault Duster RxL come powered with the 1.5 litre dCi diesel motor that pumps out 85 PS of power at 3750 Rpm and 200 NM of torque at 1900 Rpm. The other two variants – Renault Duster RxL and Renault Duster RxZ—are equipped with 1. 5 litre dCi and 110 PS diesel motor. And two optional variants are also offered as 85 PS diesel safety pack at Rs 9.99 lakh and 110 PS optional pack at Rs 11.99 lakh.
The company-claimed efficiency figure for the petrol variant is around 13. 24 kmpl, while the diesel version is more frugal with 20.46 kmpl of mileage for the 85 PS diesel Duster. On the other hand, the 110 PS diesel Duster can return a mileage of 19.01 kmpl which is again good. Renault Duster petrol version is bestowed with a hydraulic power steering while the diesel version is equipped with a more frugal electro-hydraulic power steering. Renault is also proffering a 2+2 years/80,000 km warranty on the Duster SUV. The SUV is launched only in two wheel drive guise.
Some of the standard features that the SUV is equipped with include front seat back pocket, map pocket on front door trim, 2 cup holders, bottle holder on console, versatile rear parcel shelf with storage space, passenger vanity mirror, digital clock, front map lamp, front and rear reading lamps, theatre dimming interior lamps + key answer back function, trunk room and glove box lamp and backdoor release type.
Apart from these, some other safety and convenience features that are offered in select variants include ABS, EBD and Brake assist. Tilt steering, keyless entry, rear AC vents, reverse parking sensors, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, 2 Din Audio with USB and Bluetooth support, steering-mounted audio and phone controls and optional leather pack are some of the features that can be seen in select models.
The SUV will give tough competition to forthcoming SUVs like Ford EcoSport, Maruti XA Alpha and Mahindra Mini Xylo. Ford EcoSport is expected to break covers in the beginning of January in 2013 while the Maruti XA Alpha could be launched during the festive season. Mahindra Mini Xylo is a shorter and squeezed version of Mahindra Xylo which is also on the brink of being launched. The prices of these upcoming vehicles will be under Rs 10 lakh; Mahindra Xylo is expected to be priced at Rs 5 to Rs 6 lakh, while the other two cars could be priced between Rs 7 lakh to Rs 9 lakh. Since there is ample time before the launch of these cars, Duster has enough time to create its comfort zone among Indian customers. The pre-launch booking, which began a few days ago at Renault dealerships, garnered around 1000 bookings. If the SUV manages to strike a chord with customers, Renault would be able to see some surge in the monthly sales figures which, otherwise, are a little jaded.
On July 5th, the Renault Duster will be launched in Chennai and Bangalore; on July 6th, it will be rolled out in Chandigarh and on July 7th, it will be unveiled in Kolkata.
