Maruti Suzuki India’s sale up 20 per cent in June 2012

Despite the sluggish sales growth in the Indian car market, Maruti Suzuki India, the largest car maker of India has managed to post a robust sales growth in the month of June 2012. Car sales in India slumped drastically owing to high jump in fuel prices along with interest rates. Maruti Suzuki India saw a bad phase in 2011 when the company’s Manesar plant was under the grip of labour strikes which led to fall in its sales causing immense loss. However, year 2012 started with a bang for the company with the launch of new Maruti Swift Dzire notchback.

The notchback roped in good number of bookings and is selling hot cakes in India every month lifting up Maruti Suzuki India’s sales figure.

On the other hand one crucial product from the company’s stables that reached the Maruti dealerships in the month of April, the compact MPV Maruti Ertiga has also proved to be a huge hitMaruti Ertiga successfully wooed the Indian customers; these new launches have helped Maruti pull a good growth figure in the month of June. In the month of June the company registered a whopping 20% growth as compared to the same time period a year before. A total of 83,531 units were sold by Maruti Suzuki India in the month of June 2012.

Maruti Suzuki India has been able to achieve this growth figure on the back of its star models Maruti Swift Dzire and Maruti Ertiga. The company also commenced shipping Maruti Ertiga to overseas market which has improved the export figure of the car major by 27% with 13,066 units exported in the month of June. Small cars from Maruti Suzuki India, Maruti Estilo, Maruti Swift, Maruti Ritz, registered growth of 39% with 22,624 units sold in June. Facelifted Maruti Swift Dzire which was launched in India in February witnessed growth of 453 per cent with 13,741 units sold in June. Maruti Suzuki India’s best selling cars, Maruti Swift hatchback and Maruti Swift Dzire are manufactured at the Maruti’s Manesar plant, which saw continual labour strikes last year.

The other older models of the company saw sluggish demand and added to the gloom of the industry. These models that witnessed slump in June sales are Maruti 800, Maruti A-Star, Maruti Alto, Maruti WagonR. Sales of these cars slid by 10 % with 34,198 units sold in June. Sales of Maruti’s other sedan Maruti SX4 and its premium sedan, Maruti Kizashi also saw a fall of 43 per cent and 81 per cent respectively in June.

Other popular small cars which once used to be a good performer also witnessed low sales, these are Hyundai i10, Hyundai Santro, Toyota Etios Liva and Honda Brio. Hyundai Motors India registered sales of 30,450 units in June, which means that the company did not go through much loss in June 2012. However, the company has seen sharp fall in the demand for its petrol powered small cars which have turned out to be a sour point for the South Korean auto major.
