Experience an unspoiled and relaxing tour to the city of Odense
Situated on the banks of the Odense River, Odense is the third largest city of Denmark. The civilization and museums, which are more than thousand years old, speak about the rich heritage of Odense. The cathedrals, monasteries, beaches, art galleries, museums and everything lies within a small distance in the city of Odense. Visitors often walk along the river enjoying the panoramic views of gardens. Of course, you should carry a map or Google Map service in your device to move around the city alone, but it will be the most special and lasting experience in your life.
Below are the top three tourist attractions you must visit during your Odense Holidays:
St. Canute’s Cathedral
Located to the south of the square, St. Canute’s Cathedral is the best example of Gothic style architecture and the finest cathedral of Denmark; however it is the most underrated site of the country. This Odense Cathedral is given its name after the Danish Canute the Saint. The vault, where the relics of Canute and his brother Benedict are put for exhibition, is the most visited part of this sight.
Well-worn stone steps show the way to the crypts of Saint Canute and Alban. Nearby is the lush green bank of the Odense River and gardens of HC Andersen Haven. The gardens are given their name after a famous fairytales’ author, Andersen, who born in Odense. In fact, you’ll also find the metal sculpture of fairytale characters in these gardens.
The Railway Museum
Located right next to the Odense central station, the Railway museum is an hour ride (90 Km) from Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen. The museum remains open from 10am to 4pm for all days (except 24th, 25th and 31st December and 1st January). There is also an entrance fee to this Danish museum, which is 150 Krone for the year of 2012. Covering a vast area of 10,000 square meters, the railway museum of Odense is the largest of its type in the entire Scandinavia.
Starting from 1860 to till date, the museum showcases a large collection of well-kept locomotives and carriages. It’s not a dry warehouse of long-deserted locomotives, though it has such locomotives too, the most interesting are the Royal Carriages that was once carrying the majesty King Christian IX. The museum has some model set-up where kids of all sizes can enjoy a thrilling experience of driving their own train.
Hans Christian Andersen’s House
As said earlier, Hans Christian Andersen was popular fairy tale writer, author and a poet reportedly noted for his kids’ fairy stories. Hans Christian Andersen’s House is the same house where Andersen lived till he become 14 years old, then moved to the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. The heritage house will lead you through a series of sparkling pictures portraying the world-known fairy-tales of Andersen in your mind.
The sight boasts of mainly two rooms; one was for Andersen and his family and second room for another family. You’ll find up-to-the-minute lighting effects and multi-lingual sound system at his popular travel destination. Exploring the documentary and a collection of props and appliances that were once a part of Andersen’s life is a lasting experience.
The city has much more to offer to its tourists. With elegant amenities and affordable cost, Odense accommodation will make you leave the city with a host of life-time memories.
