Kovalam- A true paradise

Kovalam is an enchanting beach town that emerged as a beach resort as early as the 1930s and since then it has been one of the most popular beach destinations in the Indian subcontinent. Brought into the limelight following the construction of a beach resort by Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore called Halcyon Castle in the late 1920s, Kovalam was brought into the public eye by the Maharaja of Travancore. The maharaja invited many of his European friends to these beaches and then by word of mouth, this beach town ceased to be the quiet fishing village anymore. However, it was the influx of the hippies in the 1970s that took Kovalam to its current levels of popularity.

Kovalam is most famous for its three sandy beaches, which are unique in their own way and are separated from one another by rocks. Together these three beaches form the crescent shaped coastline of Kovalam.

Lighthouse beach is the southernmost beach and one of the most crowded beach. An old Vizhinjam lighthouse here situated on a rocky promontory lends its name to this beach. The beach though frequented at all hours of the day, is most popular after sunset when the light from the lighthouse shines intermittently on this beach and is a beautiful sight to behold.

The beach adjacent to the Lighthouse beach is the Hawah beach, also called Eve beach. This beach during the day swarms with the local fishermen busy with their day’s activities. Later, however, the beach is tranquil and a perfect place to chill out. Like most beaches in Kovalam, beach lovers also like to hang out here during moonlit nights when the whole atmosphere is calm underneath a starry night.

Samudra Beach is the more quieter of the other two beaches with the morning seeing the fishermen get ready for their day’s activities and the evenings see them back with their day’s find. The shallow waters in this beach are ideal for swimming and the shores of this beach are lined with tiny stalls selling curios, jewellery and also the local coastal delicacies. This beach is separated from the other beaches by a large promontory.

Kovalam being one of the first beach resorts in southern India is even in present day popular among the tourist crowd for its various beach resorts that range from luxury to mid-range. Apart from the many beaches here, Kovalam is also famous for the variety of seafood options here. Most common among the various seafood variety are crabs, lobsters, octopus and others. Another popular attraction in Kovalam is the new crop of ayurvedic treatment spas that have sprung up in every corner of the town and are great hits among tourists.
