Our love affair with dresses
Our love affair with dresses
Looking good does not come cheaply in this day and age. This is something most girls know and while we feel we should be saving for a down payment, paying off our debts or student loans there is always another “must have” item driving us broke.
So how much do we actually spend? The cost of being a woman was revealed last year by Deloitte in a report which says on average Australian women spend $560 on new threads per annum which is 22% more than our male counterparts. And if you dwell in the city it’s even higher.
Admittedly most of us with an eye for style would attest that our spending on clothes far exceeds $560. A purchase of a single designer dress could easily see you paying anywhere upwards of $300 and some designers would have you spending enough to purchase a small car.
The thing is – it’s not unusual. Granted most of us aren’t regularly stocking our wardrobes with dresses that cost the same as a 2005 Holden Barina but we’re still laying down the cash – a new dress for the races, a hot date, a friend’s wedding or even just to hit the town on the weekend. It might sound frivolous but so many of us are guilty of this kind of expenditure.
The question is how much is too much? Whilst completely forgoing style for savings is probably not an option for most, the sad truth is that over an entire lifetime it is estimated that we spend $150,000 on clothes. So it’s probably no wonder we’re still trying to scrape together a deposit and pay off that student loan.
So, should we stop looking fabulous, save every single penny and never again be able to wear that designer dress?
