Ways to Maintain Oil Tanks
Oil tanks should be maintained regularly so that any damage can be detected in the preliminary stage only. Once you have detected the damage then you must get it rectified and if it can not be repaired then you should better replace the tank.
It is necessary to check the oil storage tanks on regular basis because leakage of oil can pose grave danger to the people living inside the house. If these tanks are properly maintained then you will not only ensure safety but the longevity of the tank can also be achieved. Inspection and maintenance become more critical for underground oil tanks domestic because it is not seen everyday so you might forget about checking and it can come to your mind only when you need to operate. The problems of underground fuel oil tanks go unnoticed so they tend to aggravate and hence by the time you think of repairing the problem might have been blown out of proportion so that replacement becomes the only solution.
A better and quicker way to judge the possibility of damage or leakage is by seeing the natural vegetation of area under which the oil tank has been buried. If the grass or other green vegetation tends to disappear slowly then it might be an alarming signal. The loss of vegetation or barren land is not confirmatory that there is some problem rather it shows the possibility which has to be tested further for confirmation.
You will need to inspect the tank manually or there are different types of electronic robots available in the market that can test the tanks for any leakage or damage. For example, remote controlled small motor having camera mounted on it can give you the entire picture of the tank’s interiors through which you can comfortable judge about the problem. If the tank is sizably large then you will need the expert’s services to detect the problem or to rectify it. As a matter of precautionary measure, large tanks should be inspected every six months. Large tanks store large quantity which means larger pilferage, in case the leakage happens, which finally translates to larger risks.
A good and strong tank should be installed underground so that there is no need of frequent maintenance. Single skin oil tank should always be avoided even though they seem to be cheaper option. Similarly if the tank is to remain underground then you should have a corrosion resistive coating if it is metallic tank. These are precautionary measures to reduce the burden of maintenance but if you get any signal of damage then you must never waste time in confirming and getting it repaired.
