Can 3D printing give the advantage back to US and Europe?
With another round of recession lurking rounds the corner in both the US and Europe, 3D printing technology will provide a chance for US and Europe to regain its lost advantages back. Third World countries like China, Brazil, and South Africa hold the trump card in their hand and it is the cheap labor. The electronic revolution has already hit the globe in the 21st century. However most of the modern technology in electronics is still very labor intensive and the west with its high labor costs cannot compete with the cheap labor in the emerging superpowers like China or India. The manufacturing sector and the heavy industries have reached a peak and there is not much scope for any revolutionary growth in this sector. However 3D printing technology will help to mass produce good and considerably cut down the cost especially in the prototyping stage. The US and Europe can also work on its strengths like research and development and help to considerably cut down the gestation period from the production of the first prototype and the industrial production.
One of the problem which is ailing the US and European heavy industry is the long gestation period which is taken to bring the commercially viable product to the market. However with 3D technology, the first prototypes can be brought out very fast and tested. If there is any error in the product, again a redesign can be made and the next prototype will be launched in a jiffy. The process can be continued till perfection is achieved and the product can now be launched in the market. There is a considerable reduction in the costs and the time and also efforts which would normally have been expended in the conventional form of prototyping. Therefore the US can regularly launch products which are better than their predecessors and cut the distinct advantage which countries like china have since they can never match the research prowess of the US.
3D printing is being researched and developed primarily in the US and Canada. The prohibitive cost in the beginning made it difficult to compete with the cheaper and traditional methods of manufacture. However with a reduction of cost, it has already made its presence felt in the manufacturing sector. However with more effective costing and reduction of prices of 3D printers, 3D printing will also play a big role in the manufacturing sector in the future.
