What to do In Northumberland

If you have never visited the county of Northumberland, you are really missing out as the county is a stunning part of the world. It is one of those unspoilt areas that has been developed just enough to be a comfortable and enjoyable place to stay. There is plenty to do and see, but the countryside has not been spoilt to provide access to the activities.

If you love history, there is plenty to see and do. There are more castles here than anywhere else in the UK. The Romans spent a lot of time in the area and left a legacy. The fort and Roman army museum at Vindolanda is a particularly popular destination. There is everything from battlefields to ancient Christian sites to visit. Hadrian’s Wall is not to be missed and the county also has numerous stately homes and museums.

However, the thing that attracts most people to the county is its exceptional beauty, being a truly unspoilt place with a diverse landscape. That diverse environment in turn attracts an amazing array of birds and other wildlife. You can enjoy the landscape simply by walking through it or if you prefer, cycling, horse riding or canoeing and kayaking. However, for the more active there is also coasteering, golf, climbing and mountain biking. All of these activities allow you to do something you love and still enjoy the landscape.

All of this activity in the countryside does not mean that it is being spoilt. Far from it, as the Northumberland coast has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) yet you can enjoy surfing, kite surfing, sailing and coasteering all the way along that coast. 640 sq. miles of the county is also designated as a National Park and has been since 1956, so it really is pristine countryside.
