USA online chatting
The Great American Chat Show™ is one of our proudest institutions and has been a mainstay on national television for more than 60 years. From the great Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson, through Leno and Letterman to the Kimmels, Conans and Fallons of the modern age, America has been at the forefront of chewing the fat since television had its first golden age. Of course, we take ourselves a bit more seriously here in the USA; across the pond they are trivial enough to call it ‘online chat’, while we preserve the art of ‘talk’ for the ages.
The genre has always been popular because it brings the viewer closer to their favourite celebrities, allowing a sneak peek behind the silver screen and into the minds of actors, singers and even politicians. No matter that they have a new feature , album or book to promote; a good host can always elicit more information than they originally intended to reveal. How, though, does this work in the modern world? Thanks to Twitter, everyone already knows the celebrity gossip as soon as it happens when the celebrity in question experiences digital diarrhoea and airs all their dirty laundry in front of 2 million fans online.
So is the art of chat dead? Essentially, many celebrities ‘chat’ away 24/7 on their smartphone handsets and publish it around the world instantly. The problem is, the new generation are no schooled in the art of how to present themselves, especially in an online environment where there is no censorship except your own. Gone is the art of forming a great interview, lost are the days where Dick Cavett or Steve Allen would craft a smooth night’s entertainment out of three seemingly unrelated guests with something to promote. It’s a sad day, but conversely some things have changed for the better.
With live web chats, you can be the interviewer! Many celebrities take questions from their fans online and this interactive approach has proved very popular. It’s almost like speaking to your web pen pal; you can ask anything and they will usually oblige you, within reason of course. The world is getting so small that celebrities don’t need to go on TV anymore! We have entered the era of live web chat, and this inexorable march of progress feels good. The power is back in the hands of the fans and we couldn’t be happier.
