Technology Moves So Fast We Often Forget How Far We Have Come

It is only about 15 years ago that the internet really started to make a splash. Of course it was around way before this, but it was not until personal computers and operating systems made accessing the internet easy that it really took off. The same can be said of cell phones. It was only about 25 years or so ago that the “brick” phone was not only state of the art, having one gave you clout and power. Rates per minute were extraordinarily high, but heck, you were mobile dude!

This evolution of technology puts some amazing cell phone power at your fingertips, which improves every year. Modern cell phones have the same computing power that an entire PC had just 10 years ago, and it’s in the palm of your hand. Launching multiple applications at the same time, people can view video feeds, chat with friends, and post on Facebook all at the same time. Most people remember the Motorola StarTAC phone which was the first cell phone that was actually able to be placed into a pocket. It had an LED screen (note, LED, not LCD) and only made phone calls. No text messaging, no email, nothing but a phone. This was back in 1996, which is only 14 years ago. If we were to travel back in time and show StarTAC users the modern iPhone, they would probably think it was some kind of alien device.

Television is another modern marvel that we often overlook the history. New LCD TV’s have the ability to network into your home and access the internet and content on their own. It was only about 10 years ago that the first LCD television models were introduced, and did they ever have a steep price point.

I can remember a few of them that had price points that would be a down payment on a home. Like cell phones, the advancements each year in LCD televisions seem to be accelerating quickly. A few years ago the televisions were a few inches thick and had poor resolution by today’s standards. Now some that are as thin as half an inch can be commonly found, and have 3D chips built in and amazing resolution and brightness.

Technology has advanced at extensively since the 90’s and we can only imagine the lengths of changes and improvements we’ll see of the next decade. Hold on to your PCs boys because in a few years they could render useless.
