Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala

The city of Thrissur is the third largest city of Kerala and one of the fast developing cities of India. Hailed as the cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur city is the administrative headquarters of Thrissur District and is a major commercial hub of Kerala.

Thrissur, as per its historical records, has witnessed the rule of many a kings such as the Cheras, Perumpadapu Swaroopams and Zamorins before felling under the influences of the Portuguese and the Dutch. Later, Hyder Ali captured this region and made it a territory of the Kingdom of Mysore. After the fall of Tipu Sultan, Thrissur came under the control of British. During the period of freedom struggle, Thrissur became a major stage of uprising of people against colonial rule and many citizens of Thrissur dedicated their lives for Indian Independence. Post Indian Independence, this region became a hub of politicians and bureaucrats. Today, this city is a major commercial, financial and healthcare hub of Kerala, apart from being the epicentre of cultural activities of Kerala.

Vadakkumnathan Temple, covering a total area of about 10 acres of land, is one of the main attractions of Thrissur. It is believed that Lord Parashurama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, consecrated this temple. This temple is renowned amongst all the temples of Kerala, as it is in the precincts of this temple (Thekkinkadu Maidanam) that the famous Thrissur Pooram is celebrated. Some other famous religious spots in the vicinity are Marthoma Mariam Big Church, Dolores Basilica (2 km), Lourdes Cathedral, Arattupuzha Temple (16 km), Oorakam Peruvanam temple (12 km), Oorakam Ammathiruvady temple (12 km), Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple (32 km), etc.

Thrissur, being the cultural hub of Kerala, offers Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy, which are situated in the city centre. Kerala Kalamandalam (32 km), the renowned learning institute of traditional art forms, such as Kathakali, ChakyarKoothu, NangyarKoothu, Mohini-attam, etc., is also a must-visit during your trip to Thrissur.

Some of the popular scenic destinations around Thrissur are Chimmony Dam & Wildlife Sanctuary (35 km), Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary (40 km) and Athirapilly Waterfalls (35 km). Thrissur also offers palm fringed beaches for the beach lovers among you, which are situated about 30 km away from Thrissur city.

One can easily reach Thrissur as this place is well connected by roads and rails to other destinations in Kerala as well as its neighbouring states. The nearest airport to Thrissur is the Cochin International Airport of Nedumbassery (55 km).
