Upskilling’ builders could involve electrical courses

A construction expert has suggested builders may need to ‘upskill’ in the future to keep pace with developments in green technology, which may require additional electrical courses for workers.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, explained in a webinar recently that there need to be greater incentives for energy-efficient homes to be built and potentially more regulation.

In addition to this, he stressed how important it is that construction firms – particularly smaller organisations – receive regular training such as electrical courses to keep up to speed with sustainable techniques.

“We need to make sure that we are upskilling small builders by giving them the skills they need to make sure they can meet the challenge for low carbon, energy-efficient homes,” said Mr Berry.

His comments were made at the Cut the Carbon webinar on October 20th 2010, which was run in conjunction with Building magazine in order to discuss the skills needed for a sustainable future.
