Relax and Enjoy Tourism in Sasan Gir
Sasan-Gir, located about 65 km away to the south east of Junagadh and 60 km to the south west of Amreli, comprises of a 258 sq km for the protected area or the national park and 1153 sq km for the sanctuary. Being the only home to the pure Asiatic lions (Pantheraleopersica), the ecology of the place has been protected well, including its diverse flora and fauna. The forest area of Sasan-Gir was declared a protected area by the Nawab of the Princely State of Junagadh, as early as the early decades of 1900’s, as there were only 15 lions left due to their massive slaughter. As per the census of April 2010, however, it was found that the count of the lions have been increased to 411, with an increase of 52 lions when compared to the 2005 census.
Sasan-Gir or Gir Forest National Park is a famous bio-hotspot located in the state of Gujarat.This National Park, spread over an area of about 1412 sq km, was established in the year 1965. Sasan-Gir was started initially for the protection of lions; now it has become the only place where you can find Asiatic lions.
At Sasan-Gir, lions are bred in captivity. As per records, the lion-breeding programme at Sasan-Gir covers the total area of the park as well as its surrounding area. The records also show that about 180 Asiatic lions have been bred as per this program, in this national park since its inception.
Besides Asiatic lions, Sasan-Gir is home to about 2375 species of fauna and more than 400 species of plants. The fauna species found at Sasan-Gir include 38 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and more than 2000 species of insects. Some of the major species found here include Asiatic lions, Indian leopards, Sloth bears, Indian Cobras, Jungle cats, Striped Hyenas, Golden Jackals, Indian Mongoose, Indian Palm Civets, Ratels, Chital, Nilgai (or Bluebull), Sambar, Four-horned Antelope, Chinkara, Wild boar, Blackbuck, Porcupine, Hare, Pangolin, Marsh crocodile, Indian Star Tortoise, Monitor Lizard, pythons, etc. Some of the common bird species found in Sasan-Gir include Crested Serpent Eagle, endangered Bonelli’s Eagle, Crested Hawk-eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Indian Eagle-Owl, Rock Bush-Quail, Pygmy Woodpecker, Black-headed Oriole, Crested Tree-swift and Indian Pitta.
One can visit Sasan-Gir during the period from mid-October – mid-June. Reaching Sasan-Gir is easy, as the place is accessible by roads from Veraval (43 km) and Junagadh (65 km) by good roads. The records also show that about 180 Asiatic lions have been bred as per this program, in this national park since its inception.
