Orchard Road. The word ‘orchard’ recalls the nutmeg pepper and fruit orchards that road led to in the 1800s and emphasizes the large trees that still shade this iconic and picturesque thoroughfare. The fact that it is designated as a ‘road’ suggests that this one way lifeline was once a path connecting two points, possibly two towns, and through time has been integrated into the city itself as a major street.
Today Orchard Road stretches through the centre of Singapore and acts as an electric cable channelling all the sparking energy of the city in the general direction of Marina Bay. It is a major shopping district and includes an extensive infrastructure comprising underground pedestrian walkwaysbetween malls runnin below street level.
Singapore is labelled ‘the garden city’ and the ubiquitous tropical landscape of Orchard Road is representative of this denomination. The immaculate gardens and greenery lining the road create pockets of cool and calm in stark contrast to the people, cars and heated vitality of the lifeline. Shoppers flock to the area to enjoy some of the best shopping in the city and there are two Louis Vuitton stores on this major street. An Island Maison which opened in 2011 is not far away in Marina Bay itself.
