The future of 3D Printing

3D Printing is a new mantra and is now finding use in almost every aspect of our life. Any new technology always finds resistance and poor acceptance in the beginning. The common public is not much aware of 3D printing technology and often viewed with suspicion. 3D printing technology envisages a 3D printer which is fed with the 3D images from a computer. The printer uses the 3D image and prints the object in 3Dimension. It is a revolutionary technology which is finding wide use in almost every aspect. Earlier 3D printing was used only by a few premium industries like the space and the defense. The exorbitant costs made it impossible to be used by other industries except those which are state funded. The space and the defense industry required prototypes to be made of very high precision and 3D printers have been in use since a very long time in this industry.

With the launch of cheaper 3D printers, new and varied uses are being found for the 3D technology. One area of interest is prosthetics. Different materials can be used in printers today. Prosthetics such as artificial hips and bones can be created using 3D technology. A person is amputated above his knees and needs a prosthetic limb. The stump must fit snugly on the prosthetic top. A 3D image is taken of the stump and the die is created using 3D printing technology. This will ultimately give a better fitting and efficient prosthetic limb which will create the least discomfort to the user.

3D printers are also planned to be used in the construction industry. Huge robotic 3D printer arms will create apartments and use concrete and cement mixture instead to inks to create apartments. It will not only reduce the costs and the labor, but will also help to create better designs which are more aesthetic and chic.

3D printers are also being touted to be used in the pharmaceutical industry. The raw materials which are used in the pharmacy industry are very cheap. The preparation of tablets and capsules add up to the costs. Imagine a Medicine Kiosk which has a store of raw materials for making medicines. A sick person puts his prescription by a Doctor into the machine and the machine prints out the tablets with all the ingredients in the right proportions. Just imagine the amount of money saved. No need for transporting the medicines, packaging and giving margins to the retailer. The best part is that such Kiosks can be placed anywhere, even in the remotest part of the country.
