UK tops the International Energy Efficiency Scorecard
British industry has increasingly embraced energy saving technology such as voltage optimisation, so it perhaps comes as no surprise that the UK has topped the first-ever International Energy Efficiency Scorecard, reveals voltage reduction experts EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk).
The non-profit organisation American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) set out to rank the world’s major economies in terms of energy efficiency. Twelve of the world’s largest economies were tested (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union), representing 63 per cent of the world’s energy consumption and 62 per cent of global carbon emissions.
In order to ascertain which countries were taking the greatest steps to reduce carbon emissions, the ACEEE tested the nations in 27 “performance metrics” which included energy use, national carbon reduction targets, fuel economy standards and the prevalence of energy saving technology, among others. Based on a scale of a possible 100 points across the 27 categories, the ACEEE found the most energy efficient country to be the United Kingdom, followed closely by Germany, Italy and Japan.
“The UK and the leading economies of Europe are now well ahead of the United States when it comes to energy efficiency,” said Steven Nadel, ACEEE executive director. “This is significant because countries that use energy more efficiently require fewer resources to achieve the same goals, thus reducing costs, preserving valuable natural resources, and creating jobs. Unfortunately, our results show that nowhere is the vast potential for improvements in energy efficiency being completely realized. While many countries achieved notable success, none received a perfect score in any category – proving that there is much that all countries can still learn from each other. For example, the United States scored relatively high in buildings, but was at the bottom of the list in transportation.”
The United Kingdom was also the top scoring country within the industry group, again pointing to the fact that energy efficiency measures such as the use of voltage optimisation technology are increasingly being utilised by British companies.
