Silchar – Island of Peace
Silchar is a famous city located in the state of Assam. Geographically, the place comes under the Cachar district located in the southern part of Assam. The place is considered as the gateway of Mizoram and part of Manipur. It is the second largest city and located 343 km far from Guwahati, a prominent city of Assam. This place is located in the Surma valley region, a picturesque destination of Assam. The place was treated as a major commercial centre since its past days. The place is also famed as “island of peace”. The place was used during the time of British Raj. A dock was maintained there on the Bank of the river Barak. The dock and the nearby market place were covered by stones and from that the place got its name as “Shiler Chor”. Gradually it became Silchar” and it was well accepted by the British people for its linguistic simplification and they officially used it as ‘silchar’. Silchar offers many tourist visited places in and around the city. Bhubaneswar Temple, Martyrs’ Tomb, Maniharan Tunnel, Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Mandir, Jatinga, Kachari Fort, Umrangshu, Maibong and Hajo are some well destined places of Silchar. Sri Sri Kancha Kanti Devi temple is a famous shrine of this place. Khaspur, a nearby antique town holds a good attractions along with the ruins of old palace. It is a good place for antique buffs. The Bhubaneshwar Temple is a prominent landmark located on the Bhuban hill. It is a famous temple and situated 37 km far from the city. Maniharan Tunnel is well visited place with its mythological value. It is believed that Lord Krishna had used this once. The temple complex of this place allures a good number of pilgrims every year. Bengalis are the main inhabitants of this place. Bishnupriya Manipuris, Sylhetis, Marwaris Naga, a tribal group are also seen here. Assamese, Bengali, Hindi are some well spoken languages of this region. Local inhabitants lead a simple life and the place economically depends on agriculture. It is well mentioned that the first polo club of the world was formed in Silchar and the place experienced the first competitive modern polo. Durga Puja is grandly celebrated here. Gandhi Mela is also a prominent festival of this place. Silchar is also known as an education hub of Assam. Silchar has its own airport. By air this place is connected with Tezpur, Guwahati and Kolkata. By bus services this place is well connected with Guwahati, Tezpur and others. Silchar has its rail station also. The railway track from Lumding to Silchar is considered as one of the most exciting scenic railway tracks of India. It was built by the British during the colonial time. The place offers a tropical monsoon climate. April to June is the ideal time to visit Silchar. Bushu Dima is another important festival for the people of Assam. It is celebrated in the month of January. Cultivation of crops and fruits are major occupation of the people of Assam. Other than Tea industry and petroleum refineries. Bamboo, cane and Brass metals are normally used for the crafts in Assam.
