Olympic Games help to boost UK employment
The London 2012 Olympic Games have been creating a tangible sense of excitement across the country over the past few weeks, but it seems the Games are doing more than just inspire patriotism, they are helping to boost UK employment, as online recruitment firm webrecruit (http://www.webrecruit.co.uk/) explains.
Staff recruitment drives in the run-up to the Olympic Games has helped to push down unemployment in the UK. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal the number of people without a job has fallen for the fourth consecutive month and the Games have a significant part to play. The number of jobless fell by 65,000 in the three months to May of this year, reaching the lowest total figure – 2.58 million – for over a year. May figures showed that 8.1 per cent of the British workforce was unemployed, which was 0.1 per cent down on the previous month.
The ONS stated that growth was evident in recruiting staff for the Games, particularly in and around London. Employment minister Chris Grayling, speaking to Sky News, said, “A big event like the Olympic Games is bound to have an economic impact. It is bound to see the creation of more jobs. I hope the Games will make a lasting contribution economically by boosting activity now that has a ripple effect in the months ahead. In almost every part of the UK we have seen an increase in people in work over the last quarter. It is not just a London and south east issue.”
Nor is it just an increase in part-time summer jobs. While some recruitment agencies are witnessing an increase in these type of vacancies, the ONS reveals that the number of full-time workers increased by 133,000 in the three months to May. In addition to the 100,000 plus temporary workers being recruited to act as security guards, cleaners, bar staff and marshalls, various wider sectors are reporting positive knock-on effects of the London Olympics. For instance, the IT industry saw the creation of 5,000 IT and telecoms jobs related to the Games.
